Beginning October 28, 2020, ballast water management systems must meet the type approval requirements of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (Ballast Water Management Convention) (BWM), which replaces the revised Guidelines for the Approval of Ballast Water Management Systems (G8), as well as the type approval requirements of the USCG.

The IMO adopted the Ballast Water Management System Approval Rules (BWMS Rules) at the 72nd MEPC meeting, which became effective on October 10, 2019, to allow for the continued use of ballast water management systems approved by the original Ballast Water Management System Approval Guidelines (G8). Ballast water management systems approved prior to October 28, 2018 may be installed on vessels until October 28, 2020 and do not require modification or redesign to comply with the requirements.

However, as of October 28, 2020, all ballast water management systems installed on ships shall comply with the provisions of Resolution Res. MEPC.279(70) or the Rules for the Approval of Ballast Water Management Systems adopted by Resolution Res. MEPC.300(72). For ships installed after October 28, 2020, the installation of ballast water management systems approved by the previous guidelines will not comply with the requirements. As for new ships, IMO mentioned the issue of "unforeseen delays" in Circular Letter No.4204/Add.7.
